Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures (asanas) that are held for longer periods of time – from 2 to 6 minutes, depending on the pose. Offering a chance to settle in according to your body and how it feels, yin poses go beyond stretching by apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body – the tendons, fascia and ligaments – with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility.
A more meditative approach to yoga, yin also aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence. While some asanas can bring up strong emotions, moving slowly and carefully through and between poses peels away layers of stress and tension, leaving an open calmness and deeper understanding of your body.
